As I was coming back from my neighborhood workout this morning, I was looking at my giant copper flowerpots. The ones that frame the entrance to our home. Every time I look at them, I get giddy. Really. I love them that much.
I love the way the light reflects off of the pots and how they look different throughout the day depending on the sun. I started to reflect on the journey I went through when I was looking for the perfect pots. So, I thought I would share.
My husband and I built our dream home, our forever home, in 2018. As badly as I wanted to decorate the entire house from top to bottom in the first few weeks of moving in, I knew it was a bad idea. I wanted to take my time. The front entrance flower pots were important to me and I wanted to find the perfect ones. They needed to make a statement.
So, I sat out front. For days and into weeks. I stared at the front of the house from every angle and I picked out one element. A color. The copper in the gas lanterns and in the gutters. Copper was my color. So I went on a search for my perfect copper flowerpots.
I looked high and low. I went to every garden center in town. I just couldn’t find them. I couldn’t find the ones that had that certain something that would make me say, “That’s it! Those are the ones!” So I waited. I didn’t want to rush. I didn’t want to settle. This is our forever home and I wanted them to be special.
And then one day, I’m leaving downtown after a meeting. The highway was blocked due to construction, so I had to take an alternate route. (I call this part fate.) As I passed by a local garden center, one I had not visited before, I saw something out of the corner of my eye. Beautiful copper pots. Pots that caught the sun just right to catch my attention. I made an immediate u-turn and pulled in and gazed through the chain link fence. It was at that moment I realized that I had found them. The perfect statement to the front of our forever home.
The moral of this long, drawn out story is…don’t rush. Wait for the perfect pieces to make your house feel like a home. Start by picking out the elements you want to emulate. Then go on your search until you find the perfect fit. The wait will be worth the reward.
